Iguana Disease

Like most pets, iguanas are susceptible to certain conditions and diseases. However with a healthy diet and suitable environment, your pet iguana can enjoy a long life. Below are some of the more common iguana diseases that as an iguana owner you may have to deal with.

Metabolic bone disease is a result of extreme malnutrition where an iguana is deficient in vitamin D3 or has a low calcium intake. Symptoms can include difficulty in eating, swelling of the lower jaw or limbs and a general listlessness. This is easily prevented by a proper diet that provides a range of vitamins and minerals.

Paralysis of the hind legs and tail is most often caused by a deficiency in vitamin B1. Again this can be prevented and often corrected by a change in diet for your pet.

Many iguanas suffer heat related injuries or burns. This can occur when the heat sources provided within their enclosures are left exposed and the iguana either remains too close to the source for an extended period or has come into direct contact with it. This can be prevented by simply using a physical barrier to stop your pet iguana from getting too close.

Scratches and abrasions are often located on the nose or face of a pet iguana. This usually occurs as the iguana seeks a way to escape from their cage or enclosure. Removing any rough or sharp surfaces as well as ensuring that your pet’s habitat is of sufficient size can prevent this from happening.

A lack of sanitation within your pet’s cage can lead to bacterial infections. An unclean and persistently damp environment can lead to infections of the mouth as well as the feet and tail. If your pet shows signs of what looks like blisters on it’s feet or has localized swelling and pus formations, then veterinary attention is required.

These are the most common diseases that your pet iguana may exhibit. Many are easily preventable through proper iguana care and the provision of a clean habitat and healthy diet. Regular veterinary care is also recommended to ensure your iguana has a long and happy life.
